In the weekend of the 24th and 25th of April, the first ever official Virtual Hangs took place! It all started as a way to connect with more like-minded people; people who also work in the music industry or simply love music too. I really miss 'naturally' meeting other people with similar interests, at gigs, festivals, in the line to the toilets or through other friends. This last year, I have luckily still been able to connect with new people, but mostly on a digital level. So I thought it was about time we all met. 'Face to face'.

I first asked people on Instagram if they were up for something like this. And surprise surprise, there were a good amount of people who seemed excited about the idea of virtually 'hanging' with others. I sent out a quick survey to the people who showed interest, to see what their expectations would be, and these were their reactions:

What would you like to get out of this meeting?

"To expand my network and meet like-minded people. I love this idea!"

*

"I'd love to meet people and hang out! I miss this aspect of going to gigs and now the silver lining of this situation is that we can meet people from different cities/countries online!"

*

"Hanging out with like-minded people! Interesting conversations! Discovering new music!"

*

"Connecting with new people and maybe getting some inspiration to kick me out of my current hiatus."

*

"Honestly would just love to virtually meet new people with similar interests and vibe with them. Like an online pub feel kinda thing."

With several people now signing up for the two evenings, I noticed that most of them had different backgrounds in music. Whether they were musicians themselves, graphic designers, doing photography or running a label. That's when I decided to ask some of them if they would like to talk about what they were currently doing. That way, we would all learn something new and they could practice their sales pitch. Hopefully, it would also lead to interesting discussions and even potential future collaborations!
